Welcome to the Lodsworth Larder website

Here you will find an outline of our proposal for a new shop in the village and some plan views of what it might look like. Please look at the proposed shop business plan and we would welcome your thoughts and views.

The ancient village of Lodsworth sits on the South East slope of Bexley Hill overlooking the Lod Valley. Much of the village is designated a conservation area and the whole valley is inside the South Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The oldest part of the village is at its lowest point centred round the church. From here the village spreads northward along The Street running up the valley towards Lickfold. The Hollist Arms is prominently located in the centre of the village

The previous village shop is just across the road from The Hollist Arms between Hazel View and Primrose Cottage. The Parish of Lodsworth has not had a local shop in the village since 1988. The former shop, which also contained a Post Office, ran down through poor management rather than a lack of support from the villagers, and was eventually bought by a developer, converted into a residence, and sold on the open market. During the past few years there has been a groundswell of public opinion in Lodsworth towards an enhanced perception of the village as a highly desirable community.
In the last survey for the Parish Plan, there was overwhelming support to bring back a shop.

Recent years have seen the building of a new Village Hall in 2000, which acts as a focal point for the flourishing cricket and football teams, the annual fête, as well as for many other local village activities. Only recently, an addition to the sense of spirit in Lodsworth life has been the introduction of a monthly film night, which is very well attended, the proceeds being donated to local groups. Our village Public House, The Hollist Arms, which is situated on the small village green, has also become very popular, attracting both local villagers and others from far afield. The publicans, George and Juliet Bristow, have lived in the village for many years and there is no doubt that their sense of community spirit has contributed significantly to Lodsworth’s attractiveness.
